Algebra 2 – Topics for this past week: Substitution and Elimination as well as Advanced Radical Equations. We also tossed in a few Negative Vectors to show how 10/30, 10/-330, -10/220, and -10/-150 are all the same on a graph.

Latin – We reviewed another short section on participle endings.

History/Music – We lightly covered Mozart’s background and we played some of his music. We will hold more discussion on his accomplishments when we finish this week’s additional assigned reading on Beethoven. Essay to define “genius” using these men is due this week – Feb. 26/27). THE MUSIC LECTURE PRESENTATION IN THE GUIDE WILL BE POSTPONED UNTIL THE FINAL WEEK OF CLASS. I am posting the student’s questions to think about when they start preparing their lecture, but they do not have to begin research until AFTER the Lincoln-Douglas Debate in March. The Debate will consume much of their study time over the next three weeks.

Debate – We’ll go ahead and jump into research for our Lincoln-Douglas Debate since the debate topic is still fresh. This will be our final debate of Challenge II. We hope to hold it Tuesday Night, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day) from 6:30-8:30 with a snow date of the following Tuesday (I'm hoping to secure Warrenton Bible Fellowship or Culpeper Christian Fellowship for the venue). The debate topic is “Rescuing great cultural and artistic achievements from theft or destruction is worth risking one’s life.” Pages 78, 114-119 in the guide give debate helps! This next debate will be a “values” debate as opposed to a “policy” debate. There are some differences. Please go to the Internet to look up a few helps on values and criterion.

Semester 2 Week 5 update

Gift of Music

We will continue to add composers to our Timeline.

GOM – Read Ch. 6 Mozart

(Week 7 will have a Definition essay on “genius” using Mozart and Beethoven)
Debate
Lincoln-Douglas Debate Research. See topic below. Pages 78, 114-119 in guide.
British Lit.
WAS
Essay
Read Robinson Crusoe.
Words Aptly Spoken 121-124 (Klay & Mrs. Hoke are picking questions)
Essay: Relate Alice in Wonderland & Robinson Crusoe adventures
Biology:
Chapter 13 to page 414 (additionally, read page 417 - Perch Dissection).
Drama
Bring your books to class. Read Act II, scene 1.

Algebra 2 –Even though there was much we could cover this week, we chose to return to graphing equations and solving slope lines. This involved attempting to track experimental data (also: we know 8/9ths does not equal "1" below…just an estimate). We also returned to solving word problems for distance by pulling out all the clues and using substitution to begin solving for four variables.

Latin – We reviewed a short section on participle endings. Participles can have active endings for the present tense (as students will review in chapter 22), but the past (perfect tense) form has passive endings. It makes for unusual translations if used incorrectly. For an active perfect phrase, students are bound to use a deponent verb or change the whole sentence to remove the past participle and make a dependent clause. Deponent verbs fit since they are written with passive endings but can be translated with an active tense. We return to translations this week.

History/Music – We will next discuss composers specifically in the classical era (Mozart this week and Beethoven after the break; essay to define “genius” using these men is due week 7 – Feb. 26/27). Also, Culpeper has Family and Friends’ Day preparations for the 27th.

Debate - We held a reverse debate this week. I appreciate all the work the students put into holding back to back debates so we could practice coming at a policy from both sides. We’ll go ahead and jump into research for our Lincoln-Douglas Debate since debate practice is still fresh. This will be our final debate of Challenge II. We will POSTPONE the Music Lecture/Presentation until the end of the semester. The debate topic is “Rescuing great cultural and artistic achievements from theft or destruction is worth risking one’s life.” We watched “Monuments Men” to see people’s views: on the value of art, on the scope of culture preservation, on the dangers and risks in perilous times, and on working with other nations with similar goals. I’ll hand out Affirmative and Negative Construction outline sheets this week to use over the break. Pages 78, 114-119 in the guide give debate helps!

British Literature – This week we cover Robinson Crusoe. We’ll hold discussion with Klay and Mrs. Hoke selecting questions. Come with "Adventure" essays ready.

Drama – This coming week, we’ll continue work on Act II Scene I “Radio Reads.”

Biology – Topic and dissection for this week: Cow Eyes. Great job, everyone! We only have a few dissections left (Perch, Frogs, Sheep organs and Flowers) Here are some of the pictures from class for lab journal drawings:
